Old Post Office Haverfordwest

Historic Plaques of Haverfordwest

Haverfordwest has nine plaques, on the Blue Plaque Trail, situated in various places around the city, as part of official tourist plaque scheme. There is a map available, and tourists are able to walk around the city to the places where plaques have been position. The aim of the scheme is to provide visual markers on streets and historic building to highlight the history and places of interest.

About Post Office Haverfordwest

The first official post office opened on Dew Street, in 1804. Until then post horses delivered the mail and coach inns doubled as mail depots. The move to Dew Street marked the beginning of the town’s postal services.

The Old Post Office at 10 Dew Street in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, a notable historic building of three stories, had a long connection to the town’s communication history. Dew Street is one of the main thoroughfares in the town, which has a rich history dating back centuries. The building at 10 Dew Street housed the post office in the 19th and early 20th centuries. During this period, post offices were essential community hubs, handling letters, parcels, and telegrams, especially in smaller towns like Haverfordwest.

Over the years, the Old Post Office has had various uses, but its legacy as a centre of communication remains an important part of Haverfordwest’s history. Today, while it may no longer serve its original purpose, its historical significance endures, contributing to the rich architectural and social tapestry of the town. Its location would have made it a central and busy spot in the town during the 19th century. There is a post office in Dew Street today, but it is not the original.
